Project Overview

Based at the Vrygrond Community Centre, this is one of our most rewarding projects, within the centre there are lots of opportunities where help is needed such as: Helping train people up to get jobs, teaching them life skills and Computer skills and them people support. Helping out in the food garden, pre-school and after school facility.

This project is rewarding as you will be helping people that are infected with a disease that you cannot catch from them, however you can give them support with the struggles they have to fight the disease and enjoy lots of smiles and happy moments with them.

Volunteers now have a chance to make a real difference in a real way. The arts and culture project provides volunteers to help at our community based organization which cares and supports people and children living with HIV/Aids. The centre accommodates destitute HIV positive women with children, where they are offered counselling and support, care for their children, skills training, healthy eating, social work services and a market for their products. The women at the centre are given training in a variety of skills, such as beading, sewing, patchwork, smocking and embroidery. The community centre also has pre and after care for children living with HIV/Aids as well as a food gardening project for its residents.. The centre prides itself in he fact that over four years there has not been any AIDS-related death, all because of the care the centre provides to its residents. Volunteers will have a wide range of programs to choose from at the centre and you may visit each part of the centre whilst volunteering. Whether be it helping with any of the skills programs the centre provides, caring for the children, teaching or helping with the food gardening project, your help is highly need and will be met with great appreciation. Volunteers are also welcome to change to/between any of the programs offered at the community centre.

Location

The vrygrond centre is located in Capricorn which is approximately 20min walk from the house/lodge where the volunteers will be staying. Muizenberg is only a 20-minute walk away from Cape Town and is a very well known and sought-after holiday destinations, located on the eastern shore of False Bay.

The house is close to the beach (2mins walk) so there is no need for Transport. A budget of approximately $43 (R300) a week will be set aside for your food. The volunteers do cook for themselves this way they have flexibility and can eat at the time they wish. The Volunteers Mostly Cook their meals together and usually shop together too, this creates the family vibe alot more.

What to expect from South Africa and the style of living

We offer nice accommodation for all the Volunteers, please remember it is communal so you will be meeting lots of other people. It's best to take time out for yourself whilst Volunteering with us and ensure that you do have alone time as living with lots of other people can get challenging at times, however all round it's an amazing experience and you will make lots of new friends. The township is based 15 minutes walk away and you will be teaching the children from the townships to surf. You do need to be careful with your belongings and not walk alone at night. The volunteers usually do stick together and do things together. The children hardly have blankets net alone food, so whilst volunteering here please come with an open mind and willing-ness to help. You may bring any old clothes, blankets, food etc that you may have. The community appreciates any help you can give them.
