  6. The Whale Sharks

The species was identified and named by Andrew Smith in April 1828 following the harpooning of a 4.6 metre (15.1 ft) specimen in Table Bay, South Africa. The Whale Shark is a fascinating creature to behold. With no known predators (except humans) and a completely peaceful nature they are huge, harmless and sublime. The Whale Sharks are actually fish and not whales. Not only that but they are the biggest fish in the world and a fully grown whale shark can be as long as 15 metres in length and weigh 20 tonnes. Whale sharks are the biggest fish in the world but they are also a very gentle fish. They eat only plankton and other small fish and are not interested in eating other things.

Project Overview

Whenever Africa is mentioned, most people think of roaming animals and jeep safaris. Whilst Africa has much more to offer than animals, the beauty of nature that has bestowed on this continent cannot be ignored. The animal inhabitants of Africa are amongst the most varied and beautiful in the world. Most of us know that Africa is home to the magnificent giraffe and the impressive cheetah. However, there is also a wider range of animals that live in Africa. The project offers an opportunity to work with one of the biggest fish-Whale Shark- discovered in Africa. The species can be found in other parts of Africa and the world at large though. Thus the project will be based in Mozambique, one of Africa’s beautiful holiday destinations at a centre which offers the best in watersports, the Liquid Adventures. Liquid Adventures is fast becoming the watersport centre of its region. The centre is equipped toward offering its supporters a range of watersport selections. It offers Kayaking, surf school, kite surfing, snorkelling, diving and Whale Shark encounters. The centre’s main aim is to observe whale shark information and performance, loggerhead turtle nesting doings and coral reef situation in order to make an informed advice for improving the upkeep of marine biodiversity. As a volunteer you will be assisting the centre with doing research on Whale Sharks and get to do four Padi diving lessons.
While you will be busy assisting at the Liquid Adventure, you will also get time to enjoy all that Tofo has to offer. Tofo is a stunning eight kilometre stretch of sandy beach located on the southern coast of Mozambique in the Indian Ocean. There is plenty to do here. You can sit back and enjoy an easy day relaxing on the beach, or spend your time here diving (some of the best diving in the world), surfing the waves in Tofinho, horse riding the trails through the dunes and villages or deep sea fishing.

Location

The base for the project will be Tofo which is about 22km away from Inhambane, Mozambique. The village is laid-back and is world famous for its idyllic tropical beach on the Indian Ocean. With diverse coral reefs, whales and nesting turtles, Tofo is a marine paradise and yet it is relatively close to the vibrant historic trading port of Inhambane. Tofo has beautiful grassy dunes, rolling surf, year-round sunshine and great places to stay, eat and play. There are great bars and restaurants where you can while away your day sipping a 2M (the local beer) or a cocktail, and sampling the local prawns and other delicious seafood. You could also take a trip into Inhambane, our historic local town and the second oldest town in Mozambique to enjoy the local market or a dhow ride in the harbour.

Accommodation and Food

Volunteers will be staying in Bamboozi Beach Lodge hidden in the heart of a coconut grove alongside a beautiful stretch of a virgin beach; this eco-friendly beach lodge is built largely from natural materials. Bamboozi offers a range of accommodation from backpacker Dorms to (semi luxury) unsuited sea view chalets. If you would like a private chalet, let us know and we can book one for you but there will be an extra charge. Accommodation will include two meals a day (Breakfast & Lunch or Dinner) and there will be one free small drink (soft drink/beer) included. The meals included in the cost are 300mts per day (+-£8) for two meals (Breakfast & Lunch or Dinner), being +-£3 for breakfast and +-£5 for lunch or dinner.
